Overview
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a spectacular and remote adventure to the base of Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. The trek takes you deep into the Makalu-Barun National Park, offering dramatic mountain scenery, diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and encounters with traditional Rai and Sherpa communities.
Compared with Nepal’s more popular trekking routes, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is less crowded and more remote, making it an excellent choice for experienced trekkers looking for a genuine Himalayan adventure. The trek can also be combined with the Arun Valley Trek for a longer and more diverse journey.

Itinerary
Day 01: Kathmandu – Tumlingtar – Khandbari
Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and drive to Khandbari Bazaar.
Day 02: Khandbari – Num – Seduwa
Drive to Num and begin trekking with a short hike to Seduwa.
Day 03: Seduwa – Tashigaon (2,100 m)
Trek through beautiful forests and traditional settlements to Tashigaon.
Day 04: Tashigaon – Khongma Danda (3,500 m)
A challenging uphill day through forests and scenic ridges to Khongma Danda.
Day 05: Khongma Danda – Dobato (3,800 m)
Cross scenic high ridges and continue towards Dobato.
Day 06: Dobato – Yangle Kharka (3,557 m)
Descend through beautiful forests and rugged landscapes to Yangle Kharka.
Day 07: Yangle Kharka – Langmale Kharka (4,410 m)
Continue gradually into the alpine zone with increasingly dramatic mountain views.
Day 08: Langmale Kharka – Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m)
The highlight of the trek! Reach Makalu Base Camp and enjoy breathtaking views of Makalu and the surrounding peaks.
Day 09: Makalu Base Camp – Langmale Kharka
Enjoy the morning around base camp before retracing the trail to Langmale Kharka.
Day 10: Langmale Kharka – Dobat
Continue downhill through the beautiful mountain landscape to Dobato.
Day 11: Dobato – Dada Kharka (3,500 m)
Descend through forests and remote settlements to Dada Kharka.
Day 12: Dada Kharka – Num
Continue downhill to Num, completing the main trekking section.
Day 13: Num – Khandbari
Drive back to Khandbari Bazaar.
Day 14: Khandbari – Tumlingtar – Kathmandu
Drive to Tumlingtar and take the flight back to Kathmandu.
Essential Information
Best Time to Trek
The best seasons for the Makalu Base Camp Trek are:
Autumn (September–November): Generally stable weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility.
Spring (March–May): Mild weather, clear mountain views, and beautiful rhododendron forests.
Difficulty & Fitness
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered challenging. It involves long walking days, steep ascents and descents, rugged trails, and high-altitude sections. Good physical fitness and previous trekking experience are highly recommended.
Accommodation
This is a very basic teahouse trek, particularly in the more remote and higher sections. The lodges are simple and facilities are limited, so please do not expect luxury accommodation or facilities. Rooms and bathrooms can be basic, and some sections may have very limited services.
Guide & Porter
Due to the remote nature of the route, travelling with a licensed local guide and porter is highly recommended. A guide provides navigation, local knowledge, and assistance in case of difficulties, while a porter allows you to trek more comfortably without carrying a heavy backpack.

We can arrange the necessary permits and trekking services through our registered trekking company. is mainly in basic teahouses and local lodges. Facilities are more basic in the remote Nar-Phu Valley than on the main Annapurna Circuit. At Nar Phedi, accommodation is provided by the monastery and is particularly simple, offering a unique cultural experience.
